Cowboys position breakdown: Specialists
January, 26, 2015

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

Cowboys reporter Todd Archer breaks down the Cowboys, position by position, analyzing what the players did in 2014, what they can do in the future, and what the team can do to improve the position in 2015.

Under contract: Dan Bailey, L.P. Ladouceur, Chris Jones-*

(* - restricted free agent)

A look back: In a year in which the offense was outstanding and the defense was surprising, the special teams were only OK.

Bailey missed four field goal attempts (two were blocked). Jones’ gross (45.4) and net (39.8) averages were middle of the pack, and he missed chances to pin offenses deeper.

The return game was something of a disappointment. Dwayne Harris’ punt return average fell by 3.6 yards. His kickoff return average fell by nearly 6 yards. He was not as dynamic as he was in 2013. Some of that was the blocking. Some of that had to do with teams kicking it away from him.

The coverage teams were solid enough and C.J. Spillman came on late.

A look ahead: The Cowboys signed Bailey to a seven-year extension last offseason because of what he did and what he will be. They feel better about Bailey than just about any kicker they have had in the Jerry Jones’ era.

He is clutch. He doesn’t make excuses. He works hard. He keeps his head down. Jones has a big leg, but consistency is an issue. He is also a decent holder, which is a must with a kicker like Bailey.

Harris and Spillman were arguably the Cowboys best coverage guys and both are free agents. A special teams unit changes from year to year because of how the bottom of the roster fluctuates each year. It’s tough to build cohesion, but the Cowboys should look to keep their core guys and hope to see a rebound in 2015.

A look out: The Cowboys can sign Jones to a cheaper deal than the $1.5 million restricted free agent tender, but the amount is a guaranteed and it doesn’t stop them from signing a cheaper punter to bring in some competition.

Ladouceur turns 34 in March and does not appear to be slowing down, but the Cowboys always bring in an unknown during the offseason just to ease the work on the veteran. The Cowboys usually bring in a leg to do the same for Bailey, but there is no doubt he is the kicker for the present and the long-term future.

My co-worker who went to school with him tells me Harris was seriously banged up from the Cowboys using him as a "guinea pig"-- basically every return, coverage, and blocking position they could find. He told me Harris' mom wants him to leave Dallas because of it.

Harris' mom can suck a bag of dicks...he is in this league because he is a STer, if they have delusions of him being a starting caliber WR then they are crazy.

Uh, he should feel fortunate that he's got that many roles on a football team.

If it were up to just his production as a WR, well, he'd be out of work.

I appreciate what the guy does, but if he thinks he is indispensable and wants a Jerry Golden Ticket for what he really does, well...bye.

If he were truly all that, we wouldn't have to carry Beasley as a slot guy. He should have taken that role well before now.

My guess is he knows this but dealing with the reality of it can be tough. His dream role is WR but he's finding he has to do a lot of other things that get him hurt just to get opportunities.

I'm glad he hasn't actually complained to anyone publicly, because I like him and think he could have a good bounce-back year, especially if the team can find others to spread the ST work with.

Agreed. I thought Harris would be our Crayton-esque slot guy that Romo could always look for to move the chains but that's clearly Beasley at this point. Beasley stepped up his game and Harris took a step back.

Spillman is our impact guy on ST now. He made a lot of plays in kick coverage down the stretch.

If we have to pay Claiborne's stupid ass anyway, since he can't play CB, try him out returning punts and kicks. Or let Beasley catch punts and Randle or Dunbar try returning kicks. Pretty much anybody could do as "good" a job as Harris did in 2014.

Not really concerned with losing Harris as a blocker either. That doofus Tennessee coach has been doing a good job of coaching the wideouts to block and Street is bigger than Harris anyway.

Harris was still a top ten returner and he had more tackles than Spillman who got snaps at safety.

So no "anybody" cannot replace him.

I didn't see him do anything special in the return game that got him past just taking what was in front of him. He didn't have any explosive or dangerous quality to his game. I would move on and look for a guy who might take a couple the distance, or at least flip the field a couple of times.

His value is more than a returner and lets not act like he has done none of those things before or consistently.

He is not a must have but he is not a JAG either.

Since he regressed from 2013 and he is getting older and more expensive, how much do we need to pay him to regress again in 2015.

We're too eager to dump players whoe even slightly disappoint us for something like facts to matter.

The only player that makes sense to go is Harris. The other 4 are safe, so churning Harris for a more legitimate WR threat is not outlandish.

I've always liked Harris and think he did get jobbed a bit by not getting more chances to catch the ball as a WR. When he was returning punts well last year he was pretty dangerous in the open field and I think if given the chance he could have been Beasley. Sad we won't find out.

Anybody is a loose word for sure, but lets not sit here and pretend that Harris is not replaceable.

He didn't do anything special in the return game to justify keeping him around.

I don't give a shit what his stats prop him up to be, he had at best 1-2 wow plays all season. 2 years ago? Yeah...give me that guy and I'm all for keeping him.

I think you could get the Harris of 2014 from just about anyone you put back there.

ST coverage you would have hard time finding someone who can do what he does...that I will give him.
