Cowboys willing to be patient in Doug Free talks

IRVING, Texas – There has been little talk between the Cowboys and right tackle Doug Free about a re-negotiated contract in the last day but owner and general manager Jerry Jones is willing to be patient.

“I don’t think with where we are that we need to have that kind of assessment,” Jones said when asked if there soon comes a time where the Cowboys will simply cut Free. “That would imply frustration. That would imply that that train’s got to move on. That’s not the atmosphere around these negotiations.”

The Cowboys are asking Free to take a pay cut from his $7 million base salary. Bryant McKinnie and Tyson Clabo signed deals worth $3.5 million either on average or in total in the last two weeks, which would seem to set a market for Free.

Jones said the ideal situation for the Cowboys would be to have Free and Jermey Parnell in 2013.

“We think that Doug Free can be an important part of the team,” Jones said. “He’s been here. We know him. We think that with what we’re doing in other parts of our offensive line that will bode well for him. We think he can be an asset for us.”
