Cowboys TE Jason Witten is still playing, which is more than can be said for LB Rolando McClain

Jason Witten went through OTAs today as he prepares for his 12th season with the Cowboys.

Once he finished, he may have noticed that linebacker Rolando McClain announced his retirement.

What is the connection between Witten and the former Oakland Raiders linebacker? McClain hit Witten so hard in a pre-season game in August of 2012 that the Pro Bowl tight end suffered a lacerated spleen. The Grade 1 tear means that blood is seeping into his abdomen. The injury was so severe and rare for a professional athlete that no timetable was set for his return.

Did McClain ever reach out to Witten afterwards?

“No, I never heard from him,’’ Witten said a few months ago when discussing the incident. “In fact, I think he may have celebrated a little bit after that big hit.

“But that’s part of the game.’’

Witten returned for the season opener against the New York Giants and went on to set an NFL single-season record for receptions by a tight end with 110.

McClain’s numbers tailed off significantly in his third season and he was cut. Baltimore signed the former first round pick but McClain shocked the organization by announcing his retirement last May. He did not play in 2013.

McClain recently said he wanted to return, but a workout with the Ravens reportedly went poorly. He said today that he would remain in retirement.
