Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant’s phone call to WR Terrance Williams another example of him stepping up as a leader

WACO – Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has come a long way in his growth as a team leader since his rookie season in 2010. Another example of Bryant embracing his leadership role came a few days ago.

After the Cowboys cut receiver Miles Austin last week, Bryant called receiver Terrance Williams to rally the troops. With Austin gone, Williams will likely move up to the No. 2 receiver’s role in the Cowboys’ offense behind Bryant. Williams, who was in Waco on Wednesday to support his former Baylor teammates at their pro day, said the conversation with Bryant wasn’t necessarily a pep talk.

“It was just more so, ‘We got to step up now even more with Miles gone, and we have to just play our brand of football and basically not worry about what people say about the stuff we’re doing,’” Williams said.

Bryant has also been a mentor for Williams during his short time with the Cowboys, helping to uplift him after some of his early mistakes.

Williams said the recent phone call from Bryant was yet another example of him leading.

“The reason why I pay attention to them when they talk, I feel like when Miles and Dez speak, they don’t speak much, but times when they do talk, is something they really, really have to say,” Williams said. “They just don’t talk just to talk. Normally, when people do that, I tend not to pay attention because it’s, ‘here you go talking again.’ But with those two guys, when they finally get the courage to speak, that’s when people really start paying attention.”

Bryant talked to Williams some on the phone about what to expect going from his rookie season in the NFL to Year 2.

“He was just like it’s a whole different side, like a learning tool you can take from your experiences from your rookie year and just come back the second year and try not to make the same mistakes,” Williams said, “but also it’s kind of fun because you know what to expect when you play because you’re not coming into a brand new environment. You can mix in your game into different ways instead of coming in there new and doing stuff all the same.”

Dez was never a bad guy. If you know his upbringing, you know a little more about him.

He had a good support system at OSU. When he got to the NFL, he didn't have that as much. So he started letting his "homies" hang around.

It didn't take him long to figure out that wasn't the right way.

Now he's got Jordan as a mentor. I think he'll be ok.

The Cowboys went out of their way to coddle him when he came in the league...so far as having an escort take him to and from practice, mandatory counseling, no drinking, and no strip clubs. No doubt he matured, but he had a pretty great support system.

Yes, but that didn't come about until after his mistakes. To the team's credit, they saw a problem and addressed it.

Dallas needs a burner-- a WR or lean RB who plays like a WR. Bryant, Williams, and Harris are a solid trio, but even with Witten attracting his share of coverage they don't stretch the field like this defense needs. It's a big reason teams can lock down our passing game, because there's no change-up or reason for the safety to worry about not rotating towards Dez.

Terrance Williams is a deep threat. I'm not sure what kind of burner you are looking for. A guy like Bernard Berrian for the Bears was a deep threat... but he was never much else besides that.

There is a difference between a deep threat and a burner...Williams is a deep threat with speed, but also because of his size. I'd think more along the lines of a Harvin type.

See. If we traded Dez we wouldn't have this phone call. GSM
