It appears that the legendary Roger Staubach has remained just as successful off the football field as he was on it.

In a story published this week by Forbes.com, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was ranked as the highest-paid retired NFL player.

Staubach, who helped the Cowboys win a pair of Super Bowls in his 11 seasons with the franchise, earned $12 million last year in the real estate business.

In the 1970s, NFL salaries weren’t anywhere near where they are today, so Staubach got involved in real estate. The Pro Football Hall of Famer started his own company in 1977 and became so successful that he sold it in 2008 for a multi-year payout totaling $640 million.

Not bad for a guy that made $25,000 during his rookie season with the Cowboys.

Staubach, 72, ranked No. 12 overall on the list of retired athletes. Some notables: Michael Jordan ($90 million), Magic Johnson ($22 million), Shaquille O’Neal ($20 million) and Wayne Gretzky ($17 million).

Staubach was my first hero growing up. I am happy he is doing well.
