Why didn’t Cowboys give Bill Callahan a chance to leave? Blame Rob Ryan

If you don’t understand why Bill Callahan remains on this staff, if you wonder why the Cowboys refused to let him talk to other teams once it was clear Scott Linehan would call the plays, here’s your answer.

Rob Ryan.

Think about it. Not only did the Cowboys defense go into a free fall once Ryan was relieved of his duties, he had the audacity to go to New Orleans and transform what had been the league’s worst defense into a group that ranked No. 4 in the NFL in 2013. In the aftermath of the Cowboys 49-17 loss to the Saints in November, owner Jerry Jones acknowledged it might have been a mistake to let Ryan go.

It’s a mistake Jones doesn’t want to repeat.

Cleveland and Baltimore were denied permission to speak to Callahan about joining their staff as an offensive coordinator. A dramatic, one-season turnaround for the Browns appears unlikely.

But the Ravens? It’s not inconceivable that Callahan could ignite quarterback Joe Flacco. If he’s there to preside over Torrey Smith’s continued rise at wide receiver and running back Ray Rice enjoys a bounce back season, Baltimore would again be a legitimate playoff threat.

What if the Ravens offense flourished and the Cowboys offense continued to struggle after Callahan’s departure?

Obviously, there is no guarantee that any of this would have happened. But they were possibilities, possibilities that will never materialize since the Cowboys have decided it’s in their best interest to hoard offensive play callers.

Blame Rob Ryan.

Callahan probably wasn't going to leave and get handed over someone's offense lock, stock and barrel. Difference circumstances.
