Cowboys C Travis Frederick makes All-Rookie team

Critics charged that the Cowboys reached to take Travis Frederick in the first round of draft.

It turns out the center is the only member of the Cowboys class of 2013 to be recognized for his performance.

The Professional Football Writers of America released their All-Rookie team on Tuesday. Frederick is the only one of the club’s seven picks to earn a spot.

The Cowboys went into last year’s draft determined to upgrade the offensive line. The club traded the No. 18 pick for San Francisco’s first and third round picks (Nos. 31 and 74) only to watch a run on offensive linemen occur immediately after the trade.

When the Cowboys did pick at No. 31, Frederick was the only player the club felt confident could step in and start from day one left on the board. He was the pick even though many projected he would go in the second round.

Frederick was on the field for every offensive snap in 2013 and helped anchor the interior of an improved offensive line.

The Cowboys then used the third round pick they acquired from the 49ers to select receiver Terrance Williams. While he had a solid rookie season, San Diego’s Keenan Allen and Houston’s DeAndre Hopkins landed the two wide receiver spots voted on by the PFWA.

No Cowboys rookies made the team last season.

Terrence Williams dropped off as the season went on or he would have made it over Hopkins.

I like Frederick. Looked good his rookie year and should be a good C for the Cowboys for years to come. As far as this award goes though...how much competition did he even have? How many rookie C actually started in the NFL this season? 2 or 3 maybe? I don't know for sure but it can't be much more than that, right?

In my opinion Williams had the better season. Williams had to battle for playing time in Dallas. Saw far fewer targets and had almost as many yards and more TDs then Hopkins. It was close but I think Williams was the better player this year.

You wouldn't think it would be very many.

Brian Schwenke is the only other rookie center who actually started as far as I know. But he was injured for part of the season.

Regardless, Frederick had a fine season and it was well deserved. He should be a fixture for years to come.

I liked him when he was drafted even if some though he was picked too soon.
