While the Cowboys absorbed ample criticism this season, failing to reach the playoffs and blowing their lead in the NFC East, owner Jerry Jones has resisted any change to his coaching staff, and, sources said, offensive coordinator Bill Callahan will continue calling plays in 2014.
Callahan took over play calling duties for head coach Jason Garrett for the 2013 season, and, late in the year, the team altered the dynamic of how plays got wired into quarterback Tony Romo, with Garrett becoming the conduit from Callahan to the passer. However, Garrett has significant responsibilities already beyond play calling duties and the Cowboys believe their offense remains headed in the right direction, while the issues were by and large on defense, where Monte Kiffin remains as the coordinator to this point.
Jones has defended his decision to hire Kiffin and run a Tampa-2 scheme that has been viewed as outdated by many in this era of spread formations and pass-heavy approaches to offense. Jones can be stubborn and thus far status quo is the rule.
