Cowboys coaches fear firings

Updated: December 22, 2013, 10:17 AM ET

By Ed Werder | ESPN

There is concern internally that coach Jason Garrett and his entire coaching staff will be fired unless the Dallas Cowboys win the NFC East and reach the playoffs, a team source said.

Dallas likely needs to beat the Washington Redskins on Sunday and then prevail against the Philadelphia Eagles in a winner-take-all season finale in Week 17 -- which is how each of the past two seasons have ended for Garrett's teams against the New York Giants in 2011 and Redskins in 2012.

Despite lingering tension between Garrett and Tony Romo after the coach singled out the quarterback for wrongly changing a run call into a pass before last week's game-turning interception against the Green Bay Packers, where the Cowboys lost despite leading 26-3 at halftime, Romo has tried to send a message of encouragement to teammates, league sources say.

If we protect the football and put up points as we have been, he said, then we can be a team that has a chance.

"We have to stand up and stay together," tight end Jason Witten said.

They should be concerned, but if Garrett is coaching scared then I would assume we are going to throw it 60 times.

No question he's already did the run around and whined to Jones.

I don't think Romo whined to Jones...I'm sure Jerry came to him. I don't think Romo is a backstabber.

Does Tony live under a rock and do I really want to know?

I dunno. Maybe T.O. and Crayton were right.

...or maybe they were looking for someone to blame for why they were let go.

That's funny...TO never had issues anywhere else before. Must be Romo.

Let's see: Callahan took the blame for INT #1 and Beasley took the blame for INT #2. Tony truly can do no wrong.

He had issues with a dork like Garcia and an affirmed douchebag like McNappy.

If you look back at his career, you'll find that no INT is his fault. He is truly the unluckiest QB to ever play the game.

Feh. Prove that Romo went to Jones, otherwise it is false. There are enough things wrong with the team...time to manufacture more!

Romo and Witten were both yelling at Garrett on the sidelines against GB.

Did anyone say what that was about?

Werder used the old reporter shield to avoid stating or denying his rumors as fact. "I'm told". That could come from girl scout. Until I hear a little more credible source I will take a no position attitude.

Hell, it could be because Garrett wouldn't let them break curfew together.

Who cares?

Witten is nothing but Romo's BFF.

Remember one thing about Tony Romo. He used to hang out a lot with Bobby Carpenter.

He has a no lose position.

All coaches fear for their jobs for the most part.

Besides, Kiffin is done regardless. That is clear. Marinelli ends up where Lovie Smith ends up.
