Report: Jonathan Martin “gone AWOL” from Dolphins

Posted by Michael David Smith on October 30, 2013, 6:11 PM EDT

Dolphins starting right tackle Jonathan Martin has walked out on the team.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that Martin has “gone AWOL from the team the last couple days.”

Glazer said Martin had an incident in the team cafeteria this week in which teammates jokingly said they wouldn’t sit with him, and that Martin’s reaction to the joke was that he “flipped out, smashed a food tray on the ground, took off, and they haven’t seen him since.”

The Dolphins have listed Martin as doubtful for Thursday night’s game against the Bengals with an “illness” but have refused to divulge anything else about his status. Glazer also reported that Martin has gone into a treatment facility, but it is not clear what type of treatment Martin is receiving. Glazer said rumors that Martin had a confrontation with Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman are incorrect.

Asked about Martin’s absence from practice today, Dolphins coach Joe Philbin told reporters that he would only discuss the players who practiced with the team today. Martin did not practice with the team today, and may not be with the team any time soon.

Supposedly he's had some sort of mental breakdown.

Why can't Jerry flip out like this, be deemed mentally unstable, and control given to Goof Son.

What makes you think that would improve anything?
It will get worse if Jerry makes Goof the GM and half-retires to a President and CEO role. The pot will be eternally mixed and no one will accept blame for anything. You think this "consensus" crap is bad now? Watch what happens if Jerry wants to scale back to 40 hours a week and work on his golf game, replacing himself with a family committee made up of himself, Stephen, the HC of the moment, and Stephen Jr., maybe Ciskowski. No one will be responsible for anything and a collective shoulder shrug will be the answer to any question about a terrible decision.

Looks like Martin left because he was tired of being hazed well into his second year.

Probably gay.
This wouldn't surprise me at all. Not that there is anything wrong with being gay, just that if his teammates found out he was gay it might be why they were giving him shit.

He graduated from Stanford. He's a really smart guy surrounded by thugs that can barely add, probably.

Truf.

BTW... the nickname his teammates came up with for him: "Big Weirdo". Can you imagine being surrounded by a bunch of chuckle-heads constantly calling you some lame shit like that? He probably left before he beat somebody to a pulp.

ESPN: Martin fears retribution from Incognito

Posted by Mike Florio on November 3, 2013, 10:59 AM EST

Yep, the Jonathan Martin situation keeps getting weirder.

At a time when the Dolphins claim that tackle Jonathan Martin hasn’t alleged that he was bullied or harassed by any teammates and Incognito has demanded on Twitter that his name be cleared, Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN report that Martin hasn’t formally accused anyone of bullying or harassment because he fears retribution.

Per the report, Martin specifically fears retribution from guard Richie Incognito (pictured).

Schefter detailed a situation in which Martin was intimidated by Incognito to contribute $15,000 toward a trip to Las Vegas by the team’s offensive lineman. Martin, according to Schefter, didn’t want to go and ultimately didn’t go — but he surrendered the money anyway.

If true, it’s the really rich guy example of someone stealing someone else’s lunch money.

Schefter also explained that there are text messages and at least one voice message proving harassment and justifying Martin’s fears for retribution. Schefter added that Martin’s recent comments to Incognito explaining that Martin doesn’t blame his teammates for harassment also arose from concerns by Martin that he’ll face retaliation if he accuses Incognito of doing anything wrong.

Until Martin makes a formal complaint of bullying, the Dolphins will be able to declare that everything is fine. Even if the truth is that everything is far from it.

This story is getting bigger and bigger. The gist now seems to be that veteran players are using rookie and young players as ATM's, basically to fund their lifestyle.

Believable. Everyone knows Incognito is one of the biggest scumbags in the NFL.

Report: Dolphins player broke after paying for vets

By Gregg Rosenthal
Around The League Editor

Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin isn't returning to the team anytime soon. Martin is expected to be placed on the non-football injury (NFI) list this week following his departure from the team for emotional reasons, and the Dolphins organization will deal with stories suggesting systemic issues of how their young players are treated.

ESPN reported Sunday that guard Richie Incognito convinced Martin to contribute $15,000 to help finance a trip to Las Vegas, even though Martin didn't go on the trip. Other reported instances of intimidation reportedly are captured on voicemails and texts.

Incognito took exception to the reporting.

The entire Martin issue will be looked at closely by the NFL Players Association in the coming weeks. NFL Media's Jeff Darlington spoke with NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith on Sunday.

"We believe our job at the NFL Players Association is to do our best to take care of all of our players," Smith said. "So we'll continue to look at the situation. I expect our players to be good men on the field and good men in the locker room."

The Dolphins could be answering questions on multiple fronts. Adam Beasley of The Miami Herald reports that a young defensive player has gone broke because of pressure to pay for older players. The veterans are using the younger players as "an ATM," according to Beasley.

Dolphins veteran Jared Odrick and rookie cornerback Will Davis both tweeted about a $30,000 dinner tab on rookie night Friday. However, Davis said Sunday, per The Miami Herald, that the bill was split. The minimum salary for rookies is $390,000.

Making the rookies pay for dinners is an NFL tradition. Many in Miami will explain these allegations with the statement: "It happens everywhere."

Perhaps that makes the entire story worth a closer examination, not something to be dismissed.

UPDATE: The league released an official statement on the situation Sunday:

"We have been in contact with the team on this matter since last week and we will conduct a thorough review."

Richie Incognito suspended by team

Updated: November 4, 2013, 7:31 AM ET
By James Walker | ESPN.com

The Miami Dolphins have suspended starting guard Richie Incognito for conduct detrimental to the team.

Incognito was being reviewed by the Dolphins, the NFL and the NFL Players Association for harassment of teammate Jonathan Martin, who left the team last week following a lunchroom incident.

"The Miami Dolphins have suspended Richie Incognito for conduct detrimental to the team," the team said in a statement released late Sunday night. "We believe in maintaining a culture of respect for one another and as a result we believe this decision is in the best interest of the organization at this time. As we noted earlier, we reached out to the NFL to conduct an objective and thorough review. We will continue to work with the league on this matter."

Incognito, who had been a part of the Dolphins' six-player leadership council, started all eight games for the Dolphins (4-4) this year. He will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. Backup guard Nate Garner will start in his place.

Representatives for Martin contacted the team Sunday regarding allegations of harassment and player misconduct, with the Dolphins saying in a statement they have asked the NFL to investigate the matter.

"We received notification today from Jonathan's representation about allegations of player misconduct. We are taking these allegations very seriously and plan to review the matter further," the Dolphins said in another statement released earlier Sunday.

"We have also reached out to the NFL and asked them to conduct an objective and thorough review. As an organization, we are committed to a culture of team-first accountability and respect for one another."

Sources told ESPN that one of the significant allegations being reviewed is that Incognito got Martin to contribute $15,000 to help finance a trip to Las Vegas by some Dolphins last summer, even though Martin preferred not to travel with the group.

Rather than go, Martin simply gave Incognito the $15,000, sources told ESPN, fearing the consequences if he did not hand over the money.

Incognito took to Twitter earlier Sunday, stating that he wants his "name cleared." He called the reports "false speculation" and "slander" and said ESPN was hiding behind sources "who are not man enough to put their name behind the BS you report."

This is not the first time Incognito has been in trouble. In 2009 he got into a verbal altercation with then-Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo for multiple penalties in a game. Incognito was waived a few days later. Incognito also was suspended for the 2004 season in college at Nebraska due to off-field incidents.

Incognito was voted the second-dirtiest player in the NFL from a player poll in the Sporting News before the 2012 season. Houston Texans defensive lineman Antonio Smith also swung a helmet at Incognito during an August preseason game, alleging foul play.

The Dolphins will return to the practice field on Monday, minus Incognito, to prepare for their "Monday Night Football" game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week.

It is unknown if and when Martin plans to return to the team. The Dolphins have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to take him off the non-football related illness list.

Incognito should come to Dallas next year. We're going to need a guard if Waters doesn't recover and he could make a fortune shaking down all the choir boys we have on our roster.
