Danny McCray takes cut in pay

August, 31, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys safety Danny McCray agreed to a pay cut, guaranteeing him a roster spot and saving the Cowboys about $600,000 in salary-cap space.

McCray was set to make $1.323 million this season after the Cowboys tendered him as an unrestricted free agent, but his salary was reduced to roughly $700,000. Without the move, McCray, the Cowboys’ best special-teams player the past three years, likely would have been released.

McCray did not play in the final two preseason games because of a hamstring injury, but the hope is he will be ready for the Sept. 8 regular-season opener against the New York Giants.

McCray was the defense’s second-leading tackler with 87 stops a year ago in 10 starts. He also had an interception and five pass deflections but saw his playing time decrease late in the season. He finished second in special-teams stops as well with 18.
